I am excited to share the journey we're on here at Kennedy. This is a new school for the YESS Institute and a new, and kind of strange, school year for our students. We have 9th grade students who haven't been in school consistently since 7th grade, and 12th graders who are still hoping for a normal graduation ceremony. As I am new to this school, and given the exterme situations our students have faced over the last two years our beginning of the year is focused on community building. We need to build to relationships that can help sustain us as we continue to push into the unkown.

In the spirit of building that community the students here at Kennedy have participated in get to know you games played with a beach ball, learned interesting facts about each other and completed the Coat of Arms lesson. In the case of this class though they created tattoos that expressed something about their identity and I was so impressed by, not only their artistic skills, but their willingness to be vulnerable and express themselves this way. Please see some of the design highlights below.

Additionally I want to highlight two students who are already going above and beyond in this brand new class. Leah is a 9th grade student who has already stood out, both in her willingness to engage, but also in her ability to get other, quieter students involved as well. I also want to acknowledge Melanie, an 11th grade student who is already planning and pitching ideas for what lessons they would like to lead.

Lastly at the end of week two classes worked on community agreements. These are the rules that we will hold each other to throughout the rest of the year. Take a look at what they came up with. I think we could all employ their ideas as we interact with and build our communities.
