Welcome to our second year at JFK! As we close in on almost a full month back there is already so much to reflect on. Our second year at JFK means that we have some returning students, some larger class sizes, and a stronger relationship to the community here. Our first few weeks have been spent getting to know each other, learning our new classes, and deciding what we want moving forward. A part of that has been setting collective class agreements. Two themes were consistent across classes: respect and communication. We broke these concepts down more for our norms, but they will also be our guiding intentions as we begin this new school year.

In addition to creating our norms we spent some time going through and defining the five major SEL skills we will focus on this year. Below please see some of the ways our students conceptualized self awareness, social awareness, self management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Overall we are excited to return to school and are looking forward to events like pep rallies and homecoming once again becoming the norm. I want to shout out two students in particular Jada, 10th and Andrea 9th. Although we are still in the first stretch of the school year these two have shown themselves to be stong leaders in the classroom. Both have been effective at encouraging their peers and are already contributing to our classroom culture. I'm so excited to see how the rest of the year goes.
